In 1995, Dr. David Sheard launched Dementia Care Matters in the United Kingdom, quickly expanding to Ireland, the United States and Canada. Built on the foundations of Feelings Matter Most, Dr. Sheard and his organization have challenged contemporary treatment and thinking around dementia care with his Butterfly Care Homes model – radically changing the lives of patients and their outcomes.
From the world-renowned Dementia Care Matters organization founded by Dr. David Sheard over 20 years ago, the Butterfly Model of Care puts the feelings of those with dementia at the forefront of care. Recognizing that placing an emphasis on nursing tasks and medical care procedures for seniors with dementia is not always the most effective treatment method, the Butterfly Dementia Care Model allows your loved one to feel supported, cared for, and like their feelings matter.
Led by compassionate, highly-trained, and empathetic caregivers, the Butterfly Model of Care at The Journey Club is designed to look and feel just like a real home for seniors’ experiencing dementia. The shared environment is lively, colourful and homey – because the Butterfly Model of Care puts an emphasis on making your loved ones feel comfortable and engaged in a way that works for them.
Residents’ family members are encouraged to bring items from home their loved ones will recognize, helping seniors experiencing dementia to connect with their emotions and memories in a safe, healthy way. And that’s not where family involvement ends, you’re encouraged to engage with your loved ones within the safe environment of the Butterfly Care Model at The Journey Club.
Life in the Butterfly Care Homes at the Journey Club is filled with activity, community, celebration and a treatment model that brings dementia support back to the real essence of care. Each resident of The Journey Club’s Butterfly Care Model is housed in their own suite equipped with a full shower and bathroom, and enough room to feel comfortable and at home, with plentiful shared spaces for activities and visiting neighbours.
